SA LAUNCHES G20 PRESIDENCY AS PARLIAMENT WINDS DOWN

President Ramaphosa launches South Africa’s presidency of the G20. Parliament enters its final week for the year, with Deputy President Mashatile facing questions in the National Council of Provinces.

Outgoing US President Joe Biden travels to Angola to announce deliverables on the Lobito Corridor rail link to the DRC and Zambia.

French President Emmanuel Macron visits Saudi Arabia for talks on energy, security and bilateral relations.

The International Court of Justice hears a case brought by Pacific Islands nations on holding states accountable for rising sea levels caused by climate change.

The US Drug Enforcement Administration holds its first hearing on rescheduling marijuana from Schedule I to Schedule III.

It is the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery. The International Labour Organisation estimates that there are 21 million people in forced labour.

President Cyril Ramaphosa will officially launch South Africa’s G20 presidency in Cape Town.

President Ramaphosa will also co-chair the 11th South Africa-Nigeria Bi-National Commission with President Bola Tinubu to strengthen bilateral relations.

In Parliament, Minister of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities Sindisiwe Chikunga will make a statement for Disability Rights Awareness Month.

Parliament will also consider increases in salaries and benefits payable to Constitutional Court judges and other judicial officers.

The Portfolio Committee on Basic Education will discuss alleged tender irregularities in IT contracts within the Western Cape Education Department.

Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Blade Nzimande will deliver the keynote address at the 2024 Science Forum in Pretoria.

Stats SA will release GDP figures for the third quarter of 2024, following a 0.4% rise in the previous quarter.

Twelve by-elections will take place in Thabazimbi, Limpopo following the dissolution of the entire local municipality in August 2024.

The 2023 Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) will be released. South African has historically scored in the bottom three countries.

The U.S. Supreme Court hears a landmark case on gender-affirming care and state bans on treatments for transgender youth.
